The Trump Administration to Provide Half Food Stamp Benefits in November

The federal government announced it would grant partial support to numerous SNAP recipients as the ongoing federal closure approached a unprecedented period.

Benefit Cut Information

Amid mounting anxiety for the nearly 42 million individuals enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the USDA declared it would use reserve funds to maintain payments, though at only 50% of the standard amount households normally receive.

Funding for the assistance officially ended on the weekend due to the US government shutdown, now in its thirty-fourth day with no sign of completion.

Legal Developments

The decision came in a court filing after previous rejections to release urgent funding on claimed legal grounds. A judicial authority had determined the leadership could not refuse program funds as a result of the shutdown.

Following the court order, the executive branch announced it would be "privileged" to provide emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Difficulties

Officials suggested that money could start flowing by Wednesday, but emphasized the need for additional direction from the legal system on how to properly reallocate resources for SNAP assistance.

  • Various authorities have indicated it will take time or even longer periods to distribute assistance to low-income families.
  • Long queues have been documented at food banks around the United States.
  • In multiple states, large venue areas were converted into assistance centers.

Local Emergency Measures

Several states, like New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared emergency declarations to supply temporary funds for assistance. However, these amounts were expected to be a small portion of the normal government funding.

The federal costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion monthly throughout the United States.
